People Who Inject Drugs – Targeted Intervention

The People Who Inject Drugs (PWID) Targeted Intervention (TI) Project is a critical public health initiative implemented by Dantan Manav Kalyan Kendra (DMKK) in partnership with the West Bengal State AIDS Prevention & Control Society (WBSAP&CS), under the guidance of the National AIDS Control Organization (NACO).

This project addresses the needs of a highly vulnerable group – individuals who inject drugs – with the goal of preventing HIV transmission, promoting harm reduction, and ensuring linkages to health and social services.

Components :

DMKK provides qualitative counselling to reduce high-risk behaviours and promote safe sex practices. The project includes distributing essential commodities such as needles, syringes, and condoms among IDUs. Additionally, DMKK links PLHIV (People Living with HIV) IDUs and their partners to ART centers and government social security schemes. Quarterly general medical check-ups are provided for IDUs through various services, including Strengthening Outreach Activity (SOA) and health camps.

Working Area :

Currently, the PWID TI project is being implemented across five high-risk hotspots under the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC):

  1. Khidirpur
  2. Jora Bagan
  3. Maniktala
  4. Sealdah
  5. Beltala RTO
