Inclusive education is a core focus for Dantan Manav Kalyan Kendra (DMKK), particularly for Children With Special Needs (CWSN). Recognizing that children with disabilities are often excluded from mainstream education, DMKK provides opportunities for these children to continue their education in regular schools at the secondary level within an inclusive environment.
DMKK operates a CWSN home called ‘Jamuna Balika Abash’ for girls below 18 years of age under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015. This initiative is in association with the Women and Child Development and Social Welfare Department, Government of West Bengal, under the CPS programme of the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India.
Residents of Jamuna Balika Abash are involved in formal education as well as open learning under the National Institute of Open Learning (NIOS) education system. Twenty-one residents are studying in different classes in formal schools, and one resident is registered under the NIOS system. To enhance their learning experience, one special educator and one tutor have been appointed as per Mission Vatsalya guidelines.
The children attend school three days a week and a Day Care Centre for the remaining three days. In addition to general education, they receive special training in drawing, dancing, yoga, and vocational courses. Some of the children participate in various competitions and achieve notable positions throughout the year.
To support their development, the children receive different types of therapy from specialist therapists at our Child Care Institution. These therapies include speech therapy, physiotherapy, play therapy, occupational therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), tailored to each child’s specific needs.
